Riding To Work Everyday

It has been a great experience lately to ride to work every morning. The exercise I get in the morning is great, but the best is passing all those cars stuck in traffic burning fuel while I wiz by using mainly glucose.

Whitewater Rafting On The Hudson

A month ago was the best summrer whitewater rafting ever on the Hudson. We had record amount of rain in the Adirondacks and Indian Lake was at a 100 year high. The dam that controls the water flow into Indian River that empties into the Hudson was wide open for a couple of weeks to bring the lake back to its normal summer levels. As a result, the rivers were flowing like snow melt season. However, the water was definitely much warmer than in the spring making rafting a lot more bearable.

It was quite the gift to whitewater enthusiasts.

Mountain Biking On Old Logging Trails

We had a great time biking Perkins Clearing between Indian Lake and Speculator off of Route 30 in New York. It used to be logging trails that is no longer in use and is great for biking. There are some campsites available in there also which are accessible by car. As these trails were for logging purposes, they are wide enough for a car and it is not single track riding. However, it does provide nice access into the Adirondack forests with views of streams, ponds, and mountains.

Boating on Indian Lake

Indian Lake, New York is one of the quietest lakes in the Adirondacks that allow motorboats. It is about 14 miles long and 1/2 mile at its widest point. On any given day, it has a few boats on the water at a time. On a busy weekend like the 4th of July, there may be up to 20 boats on the lake.

However, the lake could get choppy when the wind picks up. There had been white caps throughout the lake except for the northern cove by the dam. That area is usually great for water skiing as it is nicely protected from the wind.

Mountain Biking At Laguna Seca

For Memorial Day weekend, we procrastinated so all campsites had been taken. So we found the campgrounds at Laguna Seca Recreational Area near Monterey, California was the only place available and decided to try it. It turned out to be quite the find for mountain bikers. The area includes 900 acres of single track biking going up and down some fun hills. At one point on the trail, I hit a sand pit at the bottom of the hill and got all tangled up trying to down shift, turn and crank the pedals. I did not get close to covering all the trails but during the entire 1 1/2 hour ride, I did not encounter another rider except for my riding buddy.
